How does fiberglass cloth make it impervious to water and impervious to fire?

Mar 10, 2026

Canvas is very common. It is a commonly used rainproof and waterproof covering cloth in construction, transportation, and other industries. It has good waterproof properties and is widely used in our lives. In addition, we all wear canvas shoes, but are these two types of canvas the same canvas?

The name canvas comes from the fact that this kind of rainproof and windproof cloth was originally used on sailing boats. The reason why canvas is waterproof is that PVC glue is brushed on the surface of the cotton and linen base cloth. This is also the reason why the canvas shoes we usually wear are not waterproof, but the canvas used for transportation or industrial production is waterproof.

In the early days, when there were no chemical fibers or fiberglass, cotton and linen canvas were an important rainproof tarpaulin. With the emergence of fiberglass, fiberglass cloth has better toughness and softness as the base fabric of some special cloths, so fiberglass canvas became popular. Because fiberglass does not burn, fiberglass canvas is often used for fire protection.

Fiberglass canvas is commonly known as fireproof canvas or fireproof cloth. The base fabric is woven with fiberglass, and the surface is PVC-coated. Due to the material problems of fiberglass and PVC, fiberglass canvas cannot be completely waterproof. Its main characteristics are fireproof, high temperature resistance, dustproof, non-mold, and good air permeability. It is a good material for making fireproof door curtains and machine-made fireproof and dustproof canvas covers.
