Is it necessary to use fiberglass mesh on the wall?

Dec 18, 2023

Fiberglass mesh is used more and more in wall decoration. Is it necessary to use mesh on the wall? Mesh cloth is applied before latex paint is applied to the wall. This mesh cloth is mainly used to prevent corrosion and cracking. It is used on cement, gypsum, and walls to increase strength and prevent cracking.
Other features:
1. It has the functions of fire prevention, heat preservation, and sound insulation;
2. It has good stability, is not easy to shrink and deform, and has good positioning. At the same time, it has high strength and good impact resistance.

Situations when fiberglass mesh is needed on the wall:
1. New wall
Generally speaking, a newly built wall needs to be cured for more than a month before subsequent wall treatments can be carried out. But in reality, it is generally impossible to wait that long. If you want to start construction as soon as possible but are afraid of affecting the later decoration effect, you can hang a layer of fiberglass mesh before painting the wall with latex paint to protect the wall and prevent cracking.
2. Old walls
When renovating or decorating an old house at home or a second-hand house purchased for a long time, it is best to remove the original wall coverings and then hang a layer of mesh cloth. Because of its long use, wind and sun will affect the structure of the wall. This can reduce the possibility of cracks in the old wall to a certain extent.
3. Grooving on the wall
For example, places where wire ducts are opened will damage the wall to a certain extent, so they are particularly prone to cracking in future use. It is best to install a layer of fiberglass mesh in these areas to reduce the possibility of cracking.
4. Wall cracks
Even if the wall is well maintained, cracks will occur over time. For repairing cracks, mesh cloth can be used. For relatively large cracks, you can first remove the wall dust from the cracks in the wall, then seal the base layer with an interface enhancer, and then hang the fiberglass mesh cloth.
5. The splicing of different materials
Today's wall decoration techniques are rich, many wall materials are used, and there are many cases of splicing different types of materials. In this case, cracks will easily occur at the joints, so it is best to lay fiberglass mesh at these spliced areas.
6. The connection between old and new walls
Because it is the connection between the old and the new, the wall is different, and cracks will easily occur when applying latex paint. In this place, mesh cloth must be hung.

If there are cracks in the original wall, fiberglass mesh is not needed. The cracks are usually caused by the cement itself and will not expand. If it is a crack in the wall itself, mesh cloth will be useless.
