Fiberglass geogrid is a commonly used road construction material. With today's technological advancements, a new material is gradually replacing it: polyester fiberglass cloth.
In practice on a certain highway, it was found that fiberglass geogrid lacks waterproofing properties. Its mesh can form an interlocking effect with the asphalt mixture, but it is difficult to secure during use, easily expands, and becomes loose, even affecting the proper paving and reinforcement of the asphalt mixture. Geotextiles can prevent water infiltration, but their strength and creep resistance are poor when the hot asphalt mixture is paved at temperatures exceeding 160°C, making them ineffective in providing reinforcement and crack resistance.
Polyester fiberglass cloth overcomes both of these drawbacks and can be crushed and recycled. During milling, it is pulverized into very small fibers, improving the properties of recycled aggregate (RAP).
During urban road construction, there are challenges such as addressing joints between new and old roads, transverse cracks in semi-rigid cement stabilized bases, and preventing reflective cracks in cement concrete pavements during white-to-black conversion. Polyester fiberglass cloth is essential for ensuring project quality.
